Cultivating Sustainable Communities
Cultivating Sustainable Communities (CSC) is an environmental not-for-profit organization. We incorporated in California in 2001, and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2002.
Our Mission
To ensure the long-term natural, economic, and social well-being of Los Angeles and beyond by partnering with individuals, institutions, and neighborhoods. Our best practices, capacity-building, leadership development, and policy initiatives cultivate sustainable communities.
Our Vision
We envision an urban community that embraces adaptable, flexible, and innovative dialogue and decision-making. Individuals and institutions understand and take responsibility for their reciprocal relationship with natural systems. They are empowered with tools and leadership skills to develop equitable and effective environmental, social, and economic systems for a sustainable future.

Our History
We have supported urban programs in Los Angeles and a rural program in northern Guatemala. Our programs combine ancient permaculture techniques with modern technology to help local communities become independent of energy providers, grow healthy food and create stronger bonds with their neighbors.
Green Community Land Trusts create and preserve affordable housing that is also environmentally sustainable. Urban Sustainability is a broader initiative to help communities become energy independent, produce healthy food and train youth for the green jobs of the future. Help Yourself! is a database of social change and social service resources for Los Angeles County and beyond. Mesoamerica Solar, our Guatemalan program, works with villages to create sustainable economies while preserving rainforests.
